Where to Eat and Drink: Boxcar Tavern

Makers 46 = My Heaven
One of my favorite things in the world is whiskey. I know, this a complete and utter shock to most of you. In fact, CNN should probably write a breaking news segment on the fact that a girl who writes under the name Red White and Bourbon, GASP, actually enjoys drinking whiskey. But besides my love of whiskey, I also enjoy custom crafted cocktails. And when those two combine... BOOM GOES THE DYNAMITE! Yes, that means fireworks, and over the top excitement; yes, I am easily excitable.

For instance, one of my favorite D.C. cocktail menus is at The Chesapeake Room. Not only are their cocktails whiskey infused, but they have cute names like Seersucker Jacket, as well (NOTE: I also judge books by their cover... crazy). But, as I found out a few weeks ago, Boxcar Tavern is right up there for me in terms of favorite custom made drinks.

The first thing I noticed about Boxcar is that it is unique. When you walk in the space, you actually feel like you are sitting in a refurbished train car. The walls are covered floor to ceiling in hardwood, the seats are made of leather and lanterns and old school street lights line the edges. It is so different than most places in D.C., and I loved that. It is a really welcoming environment; when you walk in, you immediately realize that this is not a place you will leave anytime soon; it's old school. Additionally, I could actually carry on a conversation with someone and not have to yell across the table. Granted, I was there on a Tuesday evening, but the atmosphere was perfect.

However, I would be lying if I said the best part about this place isn't the cocktails. Aside from the plentiful beer list and well-stocked bar, I was in heaven when I could order a Lynchburg Daily or a Bourbon County Rickey. The drinks are well made and I could have easily guzzled several, but the idea of stumbling home in a monsoon was not appealing.

So, grab your friends, and hit up Boxcar Tavern. It is easily accessible by the Eastern Market Metro, located directly across from the actual Eastern Market. There's plenty of parking during the week as well. I would suggest this for a night with friends, or a great place for a date. And if you're hungry, Boxcar is open for brunch, lunch, and dinner as well.

Cheers to Whiskey Cocktails,

  1. How much did they pay you to write this? The decor looks cheap (doesn't remind you of a boxcar), the drinks are WAY over priced and you could easily talk without yelling on a Friday because nobody is EVER there.

  2. I'm not alone in enjoying Boxcar Tavern, Urban Spoon gives it 5 stars, Trip Advisor gives it 4.5, WaPo's Going out Guide liked it, and gave it a good review as well. So I'm sorry that you had such a bad experience.

Also it is important to note that no Gamma Girl is paid to write reviews on Doing the District. So have no fear loyal readers, we only recommend places we actually enjoy.

Maybe you should give it another shot, anonymous... or go to McDonald's (low priced food, very loud, very crowded) if that's what you're looking for.
